Headaches Q &A

What is a headache?

Headaches come in many forms and can have many causes, but generally, a headache is any pain in the head or face not caused by an external injury. Headaches come with various amounts of pain, from mildly uncomfortable pressure to throbbing or sharp, severe pain.

What causes headaches?

Headaches can occur on their own or as a symptom of another disease. Causes vary and can include improper diet, hangover, hunger, dehydration, eye strain, muscular tension, stress, sinus congestion or other infections. In rare cases, headaches result from more serious disease conditions such as diabetes or neurological abnormalities.

What are the most common types of headaches treated by chiropractors?

Two of the most common types of headaches are tension headaches and migraine headaches. Tension headaches arise from muscular tension in the face, scalp, neck, and shoulders, and are often associated with stress. Migraine headaches are the result of blood vessels in the head suddenly dilating. It is unknown what exactly causes migraine headaches, and they can be triggered by many situations including hormonal and environmental changes.

How can chiropractic care treat tension headaches?

Tension headaches are the result of tense muscles in the upper body. Chiropractic adjustment can help release this tension and prevent it from returning, especially when used in conjunction with massage therapy.

Can chiropractic care help with migraine headaches?

Though the exact mechanism of migraine headaches is not understood, many migraine sufferers find relief in chiropractic care. Adjustment of the spine and neck may help reduce nerve irritation that contributes to migraines and improve vascular flow. Holistic care can also help improve nutritional or lifestyle imbalances that may promote migraine occurrence.

Does a patient need to be actively experiencing a headache at the time of the appointment to benefit from treatment?

While a quick chiropractic adjustment can be a great way to help an active headache, patients don’t need to be currently experiencing a headache to enjoy the benefits of chiropractic care for headache prevention. When the spine and neck are properly aligned headaches are less likely to occur in the future.
